My Story About Becoming a Mum

Two and a half years ago, on October 26 th 2014, I became a Mum. Whoa yes. Nothing ever prepared me for the giving birth experience, the 9 months prior and all that comes with it! I have mentioned it in last year’s Mother’s Day post, when I said that my entire pregnancy was quite a breeze and unlike other mums, I had no big physical or psychological problems. I just faced the entire process with an open mind, I worked throughout the entire 8 months and even went to the gym up until 3 days before giving birth. Well I was very lucky!

When my water broke, (my husband will vouch to this), I stood up from the bed (this was at 2.30 am), switched the lights on and called him; he jumped out of bed as fast as a racing gazelle and I told him “I think my water broke. I think this is it. No worries. Keep calm. I’m gonna have a bath and I want to grab a sandwich before we go as I don’t want to be hungry later.” He obeyed my orders. Can you imagine how calm I was! I’m laughing now as I’m typing this but it’s true, I was so relaxed! And so was Marco – bless him! So we went to hospital to a road totally clear of traffic at 3.30 am. We had practised the route before ( that is where my organisation skills were useful) and luckily when we got there about 20 minutes later, fresh and calm as ever, we had a large room to our complete disposal for the entire child birth process. Lucky again.

Baby Luna, our half Maltese, half Swedish twinkle was born a few hours later. I had a natural birth – and we just thank our lucky stars every day for this opportunity. I look at her every single day and I still don’t believe she is mine. Truth be told as with every new born, I’m still getting to know her and she is still getting to know me. It is a case of getting used to each other. And that takes time. The relationship we are building slowly is so sweet and it is one that becomes so strong in my heart, it’s hard to describe. I do know that, like every mum in the universe, I love my baby girl relentlessly and it is a feeling deep in my heart and in my gutt and it is so difficult to explain in words.

If you ask me what I love the most, I would say “Luna, I love your little smiles and how you sleep you’re your cuddly blanket, I love it when you run to me and give me hugs and kisses when I come from work and I love it when we have baths together and we play with the animals in the water and sing our songs. Those arms around my neck and those spurts of laughter are just the best thing in the world. You are also becoming a kind little girl with a caring attitude towards me and others. That love is so beautiful, I find it hard not to cry with emotion sometimes.” As I said earlier , it’s not something life prepares you for!

This Mother’s Day, I don’t want it to be about me but especially about spending time with our close family including my dear mum, the best mum I could ever wish for. Of course, when my husband will surprise me with breakfast and coffee in bed and bring me a tiny thoughtful gift, I will be very happy lol. I know that we are booked to go out to a beach in the north of Malta (weather-permitting) including a lunch at this pretty beach club so I cannot wait to just relax and enjoy this day with beautiful thoughts and warm wishes to all the mums out there and thoughtful prayers to all the mums who are no longer with us but who are watching over us from heaven.

Lots of Love
