This summer, a few weeks ago, we had the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing getaway at this new bed and breakfast property called Fiftyfour West Boutique Living.
As you can see, the rooms are beautifully renovated and furnished for relaxation and comfort. The property is in the heart of Gharb, 5 minutes away from the main church and the Ta Dbiegi Crafts Village and Ta’ Pinu Church.
Fiftyfour West is a stunning 17th century property. Packed with original features, it was recently converted to bring it up-to-date. This corner property is on two floors and is located in one of the most popular areas in Gozo, one street belonging to Gharb and the other in San Lawrenz.
Għarb is one of Gozo’s oldest villages, located on the highest hill on the island. It is undoubtedly quaint, and that is enhanced by the fact that is surrounded by the most scenic countryside. Its character is distinctly rural and until very recently it was populated almost exclusively by people who worked the surrounding fields in this fertile area of Gozo.
The people of Għarb are also renowned craftsmen where even today is home to blacksmiths, locksmiths, cotton weavers and lace makers, carpenters and masters in cane-work. Gharb is also known for producing able fishermen, while Għarb shepherds produce the best Gozo Cheese on the Island.
FiftyFour West comes with two private infinity pools with outdoor showers, dining room, kitchen area as well as a guest bathroom. They have ten guest rooms at 54 West with different options.

-Family room having 2 single beds and double bed on the 1st floor with balcony having country, sea views and the most beautiful sunset (1 room).
They provide a self serving buffet breakfast with a wide variety of sweet and savoury items. Served between 8:00am till 10:00am.
In the room which is fully airconditioned, there is an ensuite shower room, kettle with tea, coffee and milk, mini bar, hairdryer, 32” smart television, safety box, desk, comfortable bedding, towels and all normal amenities you would expect from a good quality B & B.

For those who do not have their own car, bike and car rental are available at the property and they can also organise taxi pick up for you when required.
54 West is ideal for holiday makers planning to discover the island, from families to couples seeking a romantic stay away from it all, as well as for groups and the solo travellers. The property is only a ten minute walk to Gharb or San Lawrenz centre and another ten minute walk to Dwejra Bay and the blue hole, also the inland sea. A short and pleasant walk out of the village towards the coastal cliffs is the tiny chapel of St. Demetrius.
The area around Gharb and St Demetrius’ Chapel is delightful for walking and enjoying the countryside. If you follow the little road along the Wied il-Mielah (valley) you will have a lovely meander through fertile Gozitan countryside before reaching the sea and a dramatic natural rock ‘window’.
Nearby is Ta’ Pinu Basilica which is worth a visit and Ta’ Ġurdan Lighthouse. There is a bus stop just one minute walk from the property where you can get a bus into the capital Victoria. Alternatively, you could just sit peacefully in Gharb’s picturesque village square, admiring the view of the church and the unique hand-carved stone balconies that adorn the village’s oldest homes, and watching the Gozitan world go by.
We visited 54 West on Swedish Summer Day so as a Swedish tradition, Luna and myself organised to dress for it, wearing white dresses and fresh flowers in our hair, thanks to the Maltaflorist team, we took some beautiful photos in the balcony of our room at sunset, followed by a divine dinner at ‘Il Gabbiano Restaurant, our current favourite restaurant in Marsalforn Bay for fresh fish and pasta.
54 West will do their best to create a friendly and comfortable home for everyone to enjoy and would be that sort of place where guest would want to return to time and time again! Steve, the owner is always on hand most of the time and will do all he can to help and give any information needed to make your holiday on the island a bit more special!
