BEER KITCHEN

Every year, new spots open their doors in Malta and Gozo and I’m sure you all like to try out new places alongside your favourites too like us. If it were up to my husband, we’d always go to the same three restaurants every time we went out to eat, but me, I like to explore new ones for myself and for the sake of my followers who are curious to find out where I have been!

Sure, using technology is great for finding new restaurants. Reading magazine reviews is helpful, too. But in my experience, the very best way to find a new dining out hot spot – or, maybe, a new chill spot – is through word of mouth or word of blogs. It’s more personal. My friends love to gossip about food almost as much as they love to eat it. Whenever I’m looking for a new place to eat, I know one of them will have a great suggestion for me and I have one for them. Over the years, I’ve learned which friends to trust. Recently, I discovered another pretty new venue situated at Skyparks Luqa by word of mouth and it is called BEER KITCHEN.

I was curious to check it out and after having been for a coffee and cake on a business meeting, I immediately thought about setting a date night with 3 friends of mine who love food, fashion and travel right here. The décor is extremely welcoming, a little retro I would say with wooden floors and tables and stools in various sizes with colourful posters and signage on the walls and the staff are warm and very helpful.

OUR EXPERIENCE

First to arrive was Elly Deguara a good old friend. We have known each other for over 30 years, dating back from our school days at Sacred Heart College. Also a career mum, she enjoys socialising and trying out new bars and restaurants and we always have a good laugh when we meet. While we waited for our other friends, we kicked off our experience with some light, fruity local beers and starters.

We asked for the Menu which came in a unique way, printed on a black and white newspaper/ gazette style paper which changes every month with new specials. Loving this already! The menu is divided into a few sections including Bar Bites, Starters, Soups, Salads, Pasta, Main Courses, Puddings, Wine List, Beer on Tap and Bottled Beer. The list of available food and beer is exceptional, easy to read. To help you choose the correct beer to pair with your food, there are small numbers next to each beer which are recommended by the Beer Kitchen team to be the best pairing for the food selected. I love this too!

BAR BITES

We ordered a selection of Bar Bites to share including crispy potato skins with melted cheddar cheese, chorizo and sour cream, deep-fried chicken wings tossed in a sweet and quite pleasantly spicy sauce. We ordered crusted pork cheek fritters and air dried salsiccia Calabrese pork with fennel seed and pepperoncino. Very tasty and yummy!

While we are digging into the chicken wings, we were joined by Daniela and Catalin, a cute power couple who also share a similar joie de vivre as myself and Elly. Catalin is a photographer with a very positive outlook on life and Daniela is an entrepreneur with a penchant for fashion, food and fitness, so as you can imagine, we all had something to talk about while tasting the delicious food and beer! When they arrived, we moved from the bar to a larger table and ordered main courses. We talked about what we did over the Christmas holidays, what we are planning in the pipeline and we were all giving our opinions about this new place. We all had a great time in this cosy place, despite the cold, rainy day outside.

MAIN COURSES

As mains we ordered a selection of mains and salads to share – The Juicy Local Charcoal Grilled Pork Ribs glazed with the Beer Kitchen’s dark ale and coffee barbecue sauce. We ordered a Prime Beef Burger with streaky bacon, Gruyere cheese, American mustard and gherkin, the grilled zucchini, mint and crumbled feta salad and a grilled pork neck served with a peach and tomato salsa and braised chicory. We all loved the burgers and the ribs best and we all said that these can very easily be BEER KITCHEN signature dishes.

We didn’t order dessert because we were very content with the amount of food and drink consumed. We ate so much, we were full! We all enjoyed this experience so much so that we agreed unanimously that we would be back for more with our partners or friends – including the photographer Samuel Meilak who sat down with us in between taking photos of our experience.

This place is in my opinion an excellent venue for not only group gatherings, events and parties but it is also ideal as a meeting place for strategy meetings for example for people who work in marketing or perhaps igaming or fashion industries. The place gives you a good, creative vibe and has areas where you can kind of sit down with your laptop and enjoy your creative flow in peace. That will be my next appointment here I think.

On the menu it says that there is a HAPPY HOUR offer every Wednesday and Friday from 4pm to 7pm with discounts on beers and spirits. With regards to parking, if you park in the airport car park, you get your ticket endorsed meaning you get free parking for a couple of hours.

My overall rating for this place is 5/5 and I recommend it highly as a genuine casual dining experience.

I hope you enjoyed this blog and I encourage you to check this place out too!
