I am a huge fan of barbecue nights in summer – grilled food in good company and chilled crisp wine brings out the best in all of us! Last week I was due a catch up with my entertaining friend and jewellery designer Sam. I thought of choosing a relaxed venue that I have never been to, to be able share with you on the blog. Coincidentally, while planning this outing, the Pergola Hotel & Spa in Mellieha who have just launched a Barbecue Night Every Friday on their open-air poolside terrace, invited me, so we decided to accept their invitation and check that out together and of course have some time to ourselves after a crazy busy week of work, family chores, and events.

We easily found parking outside the hotel a few metres from the main entrance and got into the elevator. Very warmly welcome by Food & Beverage Operations Manager Martha Zammit and her team, we were invited to try out some of their tempting cocktails at the Cave Bar, so we chose The Cave, Tal-Mellieha and Pergola Fever to kick off our barbecue vibe. The bar tender was extremely friendly. He had a very good sense of humour and was making fantastic voice impersonations of cartoon characters like Donald Duck and The Simpsons! What makes us laugh is always welcome. So thanks for that! The cocktails were delicious and went down a treat.
To my pleasant surprise, the place was bustling with hotel residents and a few locals dressed casually as you do on holiday. We could see some of them had enjoyed long days in the sun from their sunburnt cheeks and shoulders and were really relaxing enjoying their barbecue night. There were couples, families and some groups of travellers celebrating a wedding the next day too, so the atmosphere was very holiday-like and joyous but not noisy. We were hungry by now and we were looking forward to dine here.
With a varied barbecue menu priced at €25.50 for adults, guests can choose from a selection of appetisers, salads, soup, fish, meat and several condiments and the drinks including water, soft drinks and wine are all-inclusive. A variety of fresh food is available from the buffet, including a whole selection of desserts. Live music entertainment by music composer Philip Vella will complement the evening.
It was around sunset when Sam and I were there, so before we sat down I really wanted to capture some good photos in the best light. I’ m sure you agree with me that this designer dress from Luxury Outlet and this matching purse and sandals deserved some pretty photographs with the pool and the Mellieha church in the distance – such a beautiful ambiance. Thanks to Gordon at Go Raw Photography, we managed to achieve some lovely pictures of our BBQ experience for us to cherish and to share with you all.
Sam Minkowski, designer at Sam Selby creates bright and bold statement pieces crafted from sea sediment, and each holds its very own unique pattern and shade. In this blog we are both wearing her designs. Mine was specifically done on order for me with my requirements.
What We Think
Sam and I enjoyed a selection of meats and salads to complement our rose’ wine. One very important thing to appreciate is that at Pergola, they do take food allergies very seriously. Sam, my guest is intolerant to certain foods so she informed the staff prior to our arrival and they prepared a few items plated for her to ensure a safe and pleasant experience. I loved the meat cooked to my taste and also the jacket potato and the salads on offer.
Sam and I had a good catch up about work and family and it was just the perfect way to end the week and begin the weekend!
With the grill sizzling and their superb team of friendly staff looking after you, I’m sure you will love spending your evening at a BBQ at The Pergola Hotel situated in the heart of Mellieha. It is a lovely location for a get together after work or for a party to celebrate a special occasion.
