A Romantic Stay at Palazzo Bifora Mdina Boutique Hotel

Valletta might be the jewel in Malta’s well-walled crown, but the capital isn’t the only of the country’s pretty cities to boast luxurious accommodation, high-end gastronomy and to-die-for views. The ‘Silent City’ (and former capital) Mdina, is Malta’s other walled city and, though smaller, is arguably more perfectly formed, with (mostly) car-free, honey-coloured streets, medieval history and a pleasingly exclusive feel. It is in Mdina that PALAZZO BIFORA stands proudly,  and this is where I had the pleasure of staying with my husband Marco for a couple of days.

Palazzo Bifora is located in Aragon Alley in Mdina, situated close to St Paul’s Cathedral. As soon as we arrived on Friday afternoon, for our check-in, we were greeted warmly by Sandra, who manages the hotel with her husband Omar. It is a family-run business and this is something we enjoy very much when travelling to unique experience hotels like this one.

Once we checked in and ordered our a la carte breakfast items for the following morning, we were invited to enjoy some exquisite cocktails on the roof terrace while the room was getting prepped for us. That was a great start! Here we met Sergio, one of the many team members who oozes charisma and so much passion for preparing divine cocktails and welcoming us to the hotel. He also showed us the menu of La Lumiere Restaurant for that evening because my husband Marco was interested to know what was on the menu in anticipation!

OUR ROOM

The room was exquisite. If you visit my Instagram page @graziellecamilleri you will see a video clip. It is called Suite Aragona a duplex suite on the first floor of Palazzo Bifora boutique hotel overlooking the quiet alleys of Mdina through the Bifora window. The architecture is stunning. The room as you can see in the images is decorated in natural ivory and floral décor and is split into two levels creating a sense of comfort and luxury. The colour schemes ooze class and luxury at their finest. Some features include a very large bathroom, with music and a TV playing which is quite a fun experience. You feel like a pop star.

It has all 5-star amenities you would expect from a 5-star luxury property and lots of little extra details thrown in to make our experience memorable.

The first evening we were eager to experience Lumière Restaurant on their rooftop restaurant. I had seen some Reviews Online with beautiful photos and I couldn’t wait to enjoy it. We ordered a few items to share from the menu as you can see from the photos including their octopus starters and skewers to share served on a warm cooking plate. The presentation and the taste were excellent. As mains, we enjoyed finely cooked meat and fish dishes cooked to perfection. We enjoyed all the dishes prepared by their Chef and we also loved the location at sunset and the serving Sergio who made the night all the more special. This restaurant is ideal for a romantic date with your loved one and we enjoyed every minute.

Lumiere Restaurant is open for lunch daily from 12:30 pm to 3 pm and for dinner from Tuesday to Saturday from 7 pm to 10 pm. Should you wish to reserve a table you can book online here and you can also view their from their website www.lumiere.mt or send your request for a reservation: dine@lumiere.mt.

We slept very well in comfortable beds and silent streets. Breakfast was served between 7:30 am and 10:30 am on the roof terrace. It includes fresh juices, bread, croissants, teas and coffees, and healthy fruit and chai seed bowls followed by a la carte combinations we ordered the previous evening in advance.

What can we say about this boutique hotel?

There is a certain feeling when you stay in a Palace type hotel that is not the same feeling as when you stay at an ultra-modern family hotel. Palazzo Bifora is a place where you come to relax, it is ideal for a romantic getaway or to come to write a book in peace and quiet in a luxurious location. You can take the opportunity to explore some history and culture including the Mdina Experience or walk around the car-free streets where you will also find a number of lovely shops selling traditional Maltese glass and souvenirs.

Palazzo Bifora, is a new boutique hotel in the heart of Mdina. It opened its doors very recently and yet the team feels like they have it all together like clockwork. A luxury and serene accommodation in a scheduled historical Palazzo in the Silent City of Malta.

The name “Bifora”I learned, comes from the Bifora Window proudly found on the façade of the Palazzo. “Bi” – “Fora” meaning; “Two” – “Outside” is a type of window divided vertically into two openings by a column, the openings are topped by round arches.

Summery Delights and Homemade Desserts

Something work talking about is their desserts. Deliciously decadent, their homemade desserts are served with their fresh teas and coffee in the courtyard. On the second day, before leaving the hotel, we were treated to a Summery Delight in the calm and relaxing central courtyard cafeteria here at Palazzo Bifora in the heart of Mdina. As you see in my photos, and video on Instagram, it is served with refreshing cocktails and this was a great way to bid farewell to the palace that stole our hearts.
