Surfing or Breakfast? What to do in Las Americas Tenerife!

Las Americas in Tenerife is a little surfers’ paradise for beginners and also advanced surfers, having the perfect climate, ideal sea conditions and to top it all a number of surfing schools and amenities dotted alongside each other.

It is not unusual at all to be walking along the long promenade and pass by a whole bunch of girls and boys in their surfing gear, going for a quick surf or going to their accommodation after the surf alongside people walking dogs or travellers driving their own automatic wheelchairs.

Being a sporty spice type, being a lover of health and fitness, and regimental exercise routines and that I was on holiday on this beautiful Canary Island, I got a little itch to try out surfing! “Today is gonna be surfing day”, I said. So I set out one morning, dragging my husband along, with a smile and lots of energy. It was around 11 am. With my beach towel, new multicoloured bikini tucked in my handbag and lots of excitement, we head out for a walk.

I was really hungry though. I had only sipped down a cappuccino earlier after a morning jog. We walked for about 45 minutes from Los Cristianos Beach to La Izquierda in Las Americas all the way and all I could think about on the way was breakfast – a full English breakfast or something wholesome like that.

So what was it gonna be – a surfing session or breakfast?

We passed by several surfers of all ages, mostly young and very fit, showing off their six-pack abdominals. I pretended not to notice their phenomenal physiques and incredible suntans in January, and I politely observed them from the corner of my eye, kind of without looking..(You know what I mean). You don’t want them to think anything about you. Oh no, God forbid.

We finally arrived at Arona Tenerife Surf Academy which had a bright sign outside as I had seen on photos across the internet. It claimed to be the only official surf school situated on the beach, situated just in front of the most famous and known spot in Tenerife, “La Izquierda”. I asked about their lessons. They offered a variety of watersport lessons and rentals: surf, sup and also something called the bodyboard.

They work really closely with the Canarian Surf Federation and the community of Arona and the instructors are officially licensed by the Federation. They offer training programs tailor-made for you depending on your level and physical condition with safety being their priority.

Here is their website: www.aronatenerifesurf.com and this is their E-mail: info@aronatenerifesurf.com in case you need to contact them for your surfing lesson in Tenerife.

I got as far as these yellow surf boards, looked at all the other surfers looking all cool and comfortable. I took a photo In my white Benetton dress and Italian shoes to add as a look of the day in my Lookbook fashion profile, but I was not feelin it today to surf at this point, so I decided that breakfast was going to be the winner! I know! I got lazy…but hey I was allowed to be as I was technically on a Christmas family vacation! I will be back again here in Las Americas most definitely and I know where to come for lessons!

So finally….. breakfast in Las Americas

I did notice that here in Tenerife breakfast is super cheap when compared to the rest of Europe. Prices are as low as €2 to €4 for a full English breakfast. I had to take a couple of photos of the price list outside this particular restaurant, to share on my travel blog for fear that my friends and family would not have believed me.

Here are a couple of photos of the posters outside!

We stopped at Royal Garden Restaurant which seemed to have a selection suitable enough to satisfy all my cravings for breakfast and lucky for us, a table just along the seaside became available. Perfecto mundo!

I ordered and delved into a croque monsieur accompanied by a pot of tea with milk, listening to the sound of the waves crashing against the large pebbles below and felt the warmth of the sun against my skin, while my husband enjoyed the full breakfast followed by a large ice-cream. Was this Spanish food and experiencing local food? Not really! But I know that there are many travellers and food lovers out there, who are very fussy about breakfast and so this blog is with you in mind. When in Tenerife, apart from all the sangrias and tapas and chorizos check out these excellent breakfasts in the restaurants and cafés too!
