The Manoel Theatre is one of the most wonderful hidden gems in the baroque city of Valletta, and has an interesting history of its own and I was so excited that the PINK Fashion Show was destined to be held here, because I knew that apart from its beauty, it would bring back a few memories of my younger years, of watching pantomimes here with my brothers and parents and of performing as a ballerina about 10 years ago too! Wonderful memories to last a lifetime…
So with a smile on my face and a great deal of enthusiasm I attended the PINK Fashion Show 2016 together with my blogger friends and other friends who were invited to attend. As you can read in my previous blog, you will learn of some exciting brands that were showcased on the night. What a great night!
What did I wear?
For this special event, I chose to wear this elegant black Michael Kors dress accessorised with a Versace blue and black scarf, Stuart Weitzman sandals and a black Michael Kors. All the items in this outfit apart from the jewellery are from my friends at Rebelli who are always so friendly with me and every customer that walks through the door. If you ever need help to choose something fabulous to treat yourself or your loved ones, do not hesitate to visit the outlet in St Julians, very close to Portomaso. The earrings and the chunky diamante bracelet are from Porto at Portomaso.
Exploring the Manoel Theatre in Malta
After the Second World War, this marvellous theatre was officially re-opened in 1960 with a performance of the ballet ‘Coppelia’ and has since hosted several productions including other ballets, operas, pantomimes, musical recitals and dramas, some of which I was lucky to be a part of!
The Manoel Theatre is the oldest fully functional theatre in Europe. Named after the Grand Master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena, who both commissioned and personally funded the construction of the building. De Vilhena intended the building to serve as a theatre for the entertainment of the general public. In fact, the inscription reading ‘ad honestam populi oblectationem’, reflecting the Grand Master’s intention can still be found above the theatre’s main entrance today.
Nowadays, in addition to performances, tours of the Manoel Theatre are held on Mondays to Saturdays. Tours start from the museum, past the main entrance to the theatre on Old Theatre Street. Here you are given the opportunity to learn more about the impressive history of the theatre, before stepping into the remarkable auditorium to admire the intricate and rich baroque décor for yourself.
