#MFWA2016 New Designers Fashion Show

What a great way to launch the Mercedes Fashion Week Malta 2016! This morning, in Valletta, Malta’s magnificent capital city in front of a vibrant audience we witnessed the New Designers Fashion Show by no less than seven unique participants.

Lukka Pizzuto

First to open the show was Lukka Pizzuto who presented an elegant blue and black Winter collection called Night Mist. We saw six outfits for both men and women including dresses, waistcoats, blazers made from the same material in damask and corduroy. My favourite was this coat. Well done Lukka!

Maria Cutajar

One of my favourite collections today, this pleasant pret-a-porter collection called Summer Breeze focused on interesting designs in soft colours and fabrics, with pantone colours including green, purple and yellow which surprisingly worked very well together and mixed with white as a basic colour. Maria presented a tasteful combination of pieces including flared trousers and tops, pencil skirts and intricate accessories. I liked the flowy dress as well as the green pencil skirt worn with the belt with gold trimmings. Thumbs up Maria. Loved your work! Thank you for your show today.

Malcolm Cremona

“Fashion has no Gender” was the collection he presented this year. Well, what can I say Malcolm. You did surprise me with your interesting creations in black and white using lace and silk fabrics, especially the long dresses.

Malcolm designed elegant yet sexy pieces which each had an inspirational message such as “Dream”, “Achieve” and “Inspire” embroidered on the garments. Quite a unique show. Well done Malcolm! Look forward to seeing more from you!

Giulia Pandolfino

This talented designer showcased her passion for garment technology and design skills via a delightful collection of swimwear called “Active Allure” under her brand name “ISLND Swimwear” inspired by lingerie cuts but having a more glamorous approach with the bronze sliders used to decorate the pieces. I liked this show. The pieces all had a classy and glamorous feel. I particularly liked this pink and purple bikini very much as well as the bright coloured piece modelled by Jade Cini. I would so wear something like this on the yacht or at one of the many pool parties planned this summer! Love your work Giulia and a big well done to all the models for their excellent catwalk skills. You really worked that red carpet this morning 

Gabrielle Fenech

Starting from the music and the first outfit which saw a model walk the runway in a weird mask, Gabrielle’s collection was an interesting display of fabric and dye experimentation. We saw hand-made dresses in various shades of dark green which showed the bold designer’s unique style and we could also feel her quirky yet meaningful concept on the runway. The interesting one that caught my attention was the hand-crafted dress presented at the end of the show by a model wearing a green gas mask. It’s intriguing to see such creative works of art on the runway. Excited to see more!

Mari Ahoy

This Scandinavian designer who resides in Malta presented eight black outfits with were minimalistic and playful. Designed with the modern, daring woman in mind who enjoys light and flowing clothing, Mari presented a show consisting of outfits with innovative cuts, and a cool make up concept presented by the beautiful models, which left us wanting more. I hope to see more from Mari. I personally think that by using different fabrics for pieces like this, her designs would look even more interesting to fashionistas and fashion brands out there! This is the first time Mari is participating. Well done Mari for your show.

Nathan Micallef

Wow! I absolutely loved these innovative design concepts by the twenty-year old Maltese fashion student Nathan Micallef. We saw today a visually exciting winter collection – asymmetric designs made from interesting draperies that looked soft, cosy and so trendy on the catwalk. These designs are for a confident woman, one who is fearless to experiment with shapes and layering. Loved the make up and hair look too with the middle-parting and the music chosen to compliment his show was fantastic. I felt that it was well-choreographed and well presented by the models chosen. In my opinion, he really stole the show here! Here are a few photos and my Instagram video of the finale!
