Behind the scenes of a professional photoshoot for Lilly Lou Bridal Designs, held at Xara Palace Hotel in Mdina I got to catch up with a special person. Jean Paul, a very charismatic character oozing positive energy and great fashion sense is a very talented makeup artist who left our island to work overseas. During this period, he has gained an outstanding reputation overseas in Dubai, London and New York as a professional make-up artist, earning him jobs for high fashion brands including Iceberg, Philippe Plein, Chopard, Marc Jacobs and YSL and magazines such as Elle Dubai to mention a few!
I’m so lucky to have managed a quick interview with Jean when the make up on the beautiful models Jade and Nikki B was done! Here are just a few photos from magazines of the international projects that Jean has accomplished.
INTERVIEW
JEAN TELL US WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM?
I was always inspired by fashion, and I spend several hours a week watching many TV Programmes about make up and fashion trends. At a very young age, I used to paint all my sister’s dolls’ eyes. I used to use pens to draw their eyeshadows and lips and I was always interested in makeup application.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A MAKEUP ARTIST AND HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START IN THE INDUSTRY?
I have been involved in the makeup industry since the age of 18. I always had the passion and practised techniques of applying makeup. These last 15 years, I have grown a lot in my career and I’m really satisfied with my achievements. I still educate myself to improve and keep updated with fashion by educating myself and practising new ideas and techniques to suit the modern woman.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT MAKE UP?
I believe that makeup is an art. I love that makeup can make a person feel happy and feel good. Every woman wants to feel beautiful. That is where my passion lies. I love to make each person to feel like a celebrity, like a special person.
IF YOU WEREN’T A MAKEUP ARTIST, WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU DO?
If I were not a makeup artist, I would definitely be a fashion designer or stylist.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SIGNATURE LOOK AND WHAT IS IT ABOUT YOUR STYLE THAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER MAKEUP ARTISTS?
At the moment my signature look is a natural one, with the effect of a glow on the skin. I travel a lot and attend master classes by well-established makeup artists. I completed masterclasses in New York, London and Dubai. I have been involved in fashion shows in Dubai for luxury brands. My recent project was in New York, accompanying Charles & Ron, Malta’s top fashion designers. From this fantastic experience I have gained even more confidence. Seeing all my work on the New York runways was an undescribable and satisfying moment in my career.
ANY ADVICE THAT YOU CAN GIVE TO WOMEN?
All women and men should always take care of their skin. It is very important to use sunblock daily. In today’s world we are spoilt with a large variety of brands and products on the market. Eating healthy and drinking plenty of water helps to give your skin more glow.
WHAT ARE SOME COMMON BEAUTY MISTAKES THAT WOMEN MAKE?
Well most mistakes that I encounter are women wearing the wrong colour foundation that does not match the skin tone and lots of women having eyebrows in a very bad shape!
WHAT PRODUCTS DO YOU THINK SHOULD BE A STAPLE IN EVERY WOMAN’S PURSE?
Blusher, mascara and lipgloss or lipstick.
WILL YOU BE RETURNING TO MALTA?
I am hoping to return to Malta very soon so when I do, you and your followers will be the first to know… We’ll organise a fantastic photoshoot for your blog! Deal?
