1. Exfoliate your lips.
Dry, dead skin is often what makes your lipstick look rough and uneven, so slough it off before you apply any color. You can use a sugar scrub or gently exfoliate your lips with a soft bristle toothbrush.
2. Moisturise your lips
The key to successfully wearing a matte lip all day long is to keep your lips hydrated, as matte formulas contain less moisture than their glossy counterparts. Following your DIY exfoliation, apply a moisturising lip balm to your lips.
3. Finish up the rest of your makeup.
Don’t put on your matte lipstick right away! If you do, the finish will be too creamy. Instead, do the rest of your makeup to give your lips a chance to absorb the moisturiser you’ve just applied.
4. Use lip liner to get the perfect shape.
Because matte lipstick is often highly pigmented, it is difficult to remove and redo without irritating or staining your skin, so you want to get it right on your first try. Applying lipliner before using your matte lipstick ensures you have lines to “colour in”.
5. Apply and blot
Apply your chosen matte lipstick directly onto your lips from the middle outwards, pressing your lips together to find your natural outline. After you’ve finished the first coat, blot your lipstick by pressing your lips between a tissue. Apply another coat and blot again for precise, long-lasting colour.
