Last week, I ventured out with my husband and a couple of friends to a New Restaurant that has opened its doors recently at PiazzaTigne in Sliema in Malta. We know you love our Restaurant Review Posts so here is one we are happy to share from our faves this month in Malta!
In general, in choosing a restaurant, I face many considerations. Word of mouth or perhaps some good reviews. They both give you an idea of what the restaurant is like, especially from people who have been to a place several times. That would be a vote for the restaurant. In this case the restaurant is new and my curiosity took over, plus it came recommended by my youngest brother Duncan and his fiancée who I trust for a recommendation.
Before going to NUMBER 10, I felt confident knowing that this restaurant is owned by entrepreneurs Michael Bonello and Alan Bonnici who also own the restaurant next door Fratelli La Bufala, Why? Don’t you always kind of feel better when you know who is behind a new eatery and why it deserves our visit from the hundreds of restaurants on the islands? I booked a table for 4 persons at 7 pm at the end of our work week, for a few cold drinks followed by dinner with lots to catch up on!
My guests for this Restaurant Experience with Blog by Grazielle were a lovely international mix. Apart from myself (Maltese), my husband Marco Ahlgren (Swedish), entrepreneur Samir Mdalla (Tunisian) and his charismatic girlfriend Katka (Hungarian). We were there as a team, all entrepreneurs specialized in different industries, to give our honest reviews throughout the evening to the chef who was extremely interested to hear our direct feedback. We all dine out a lot and we are all food lovers to the point of having become experts unwantingly at pin-pointing restaurants worth returning to. Katka is also an excellent chef and in her eyes, every dish is like a special performance. She takes note of the presentation, colors, tastes and textures. Samir also takes food and wine tasting Very Seriously! These two are great dining buddies as apart from their wonderful personalities and most interesting conversations, they are excellent food critics. So, here we go!
WHY IS THE PLACE CALLED NUMBER 10?
It is no 10 because it is the 10th unit at The Point’s Piazza, not because the owner is fixated with some football player as I first thought 😉
OUR EXPERIENCE
We were greeted at the door by the restaurant manager Matthew and three other members of staff wearing black and white uniforms, who invited us to have a seat indoors at a circular table in a fully air-condiitoned environment, and suggested we commence with a selection of appetisers to enjoy with our first drink.
The décor of Number 10 is contemporary, classy but minimalistic with clean lines, warm wooden tones and high quality furniture, with some interesting wall features that catch your eye, including a wine bottle display and also a green wall with the no 10 designed out of real plants. We love these little details!
It is always lovely to go to dinner straight after work and catch up with friends and the underground parking at The Point enables a no-hassle-for-parking option. Perfect! I wore this new white dress I just got from our trip to Rome last week together with the gold belt and I felt fabulous!
STARTERS
To begin with, we ordered a few starters for all of us to share:
*Trio of crostini with apple and speck, Tuscany sausage and pesto Genovese
*Lemon and garlic king prawns
*Grilled Halloumi cheese with a caper vinaigrette
*Creamy burrata served with fennel, pomegranate and red chicory
All lovely! Our favourite was the king prawns and the burrata. All well presented and light to make space for the very generous portions of dishes that were to arrive.
ENDLESS OPTIONS OF MEDITERRANEAN DISHES for MAINS
The Number 10 menu is extremely diverse including a huge selection of salads, pasta dishes, grills, pizzas and platters to share! Marco and Samir both ordered the Veal Milanese – a very generous cut of veal served how they do it in Milan Italy, with rosemary infused potatoes and lemo wedges served on a wooden platter with fresh potato crisps, following the recommendation from my brother Duncan who has visited this place many times already and is an avid fan of this dish.
I ordered the Fresh Norwegian salmon steak grilled and finished with olive oil, lemon and parsley served with rosemary infused potatoes while the entertaining Katka ordered the chicken breast Thai curry with basmati rice.
We all tasted each other’s dishes to be able to discuss our opinions. My salmon was divine, the curry very tasty with a good curry kick served with rice. The gentlemen really loved the veal with a breadcrumbs. Their only comment to the chef was that the portion was so large that they could not finish it and it is also a special that they would recommend at this venue because they have not seen it served at many other places in this area of Malta.
SWEETS CHANGE WEEKLY
The sweets change weekly on the menu we were told so it will be a surprise every time. We LOVED the chocolate two-layered cake, oh my!!! And also the pistachio soft cake which felt similar to the traditional Swedish Princess Torte in texture and taste, there was an orange and chocolate cake and also a blueberry cake for fruit lovers. Needless to say, between us, we not only tasted by finished them all. Were they delicious?? Ohhh yes – Look forward to see what desserts they serve next time we visit Number 10.
When we take the time to choose a restaurant, oftentimes, we are rewarded with a great gastronomic experience built around the ambience of the restaurant and the attitude of the staff serving. We took a risk visiting this place because it is a new one, but it was a risk more than worth taking because we enjoyed our overall experience in terms of food, ambiance, location and service.
It is ideal a restaurant for both breakfast, lunch or dinner or as an energising pick-me-up place to stop at on your working day or while you are shopping away at the fashion outlets in the shopping complex.
Our overall rating 5/5
