3 Day Getaway to Rome

Last week, we had the opportunity to travel to Rome once again for a much-needed getaway, to unwind, explore some Roman sites and take a little break from the normal routines in Malta to connect with eachother and enjoy that vacation feeling while the mother in law offered to stay home with baby Luna.

Italy’s capital is one of the most romantic and inspiring places for me and every time I visit I get awe inspired by the maginificent sights, and I enjoy food tasting and shopping. The first thing we booked were the Airmalta return flights which cost us 200 E each. Had we booked them earlier, we would have found some better deals, but it was a last-minute “Ok let’s go next week” kind of booking. From airport it took 30 minutes to get to the hotel by the reserved taxi organised by the hotel.

Our Accommodation in Rome : Terrazza Marco Antonio Suites

There are an almost overwhelming number of places to stay in Rome, but if you’re looking for somewhere clean, comfortable, luxurious, central and good value for money, I can highly recommend Terrazza Marco Antonio Suites. Fulvio, the owner, was an invaluable resource for getting us tables at restaurants, helping us with directions.
This time, Blog by Grazielle was invited to experience the new luxury suites launched by the Terrazza Marco Antonio Hotel in Rome, so I went there with an open mind to even say negative things if there was something I didn’t like. Luckily I found no faults, quite the contrary! It’s one of my favourites now.

Situated in Via delle Quattro Fontane, you cannot get more central than this. With a unique and enviable position, overlooking the inner gardens of Palazzo Barberini, the suites are only a 5 minutes walk from the Spanish Steps. It is a friendly, family-run place. The owners are so friendly and charismatic and helpful, and they look so excited to do what they do which is lovely to see.

If you were following our vacation on my INSTAGRAM PAGE and stories last week, you saw how we enjoyed all the offerings of this very stylish hotel especially the outdoor Jacuzzi which was a treat on summer nights. After a day out shopping we would freshen up in the Jacuzzi and also after dinner I would re fill it and enjoy a romantic chat under the stars. For breakfast, the way it works is that you can order your preferences the evening prior together with the time you wish it sent to your room, and you will be served it on time. We ordered different breakfasts ( to have a variety on different days) to be served at 9.15 am and we used to eat it happily after our early morning jog through the Roman streets and Villa Borghese Gardens.

The suites have no restaurant so you have to venture out to enjoy the thousands of options available. We were very satisfied with this accommodation and we highly recommend it.

Sightseeing Sites we loved this time

Rome is full of sights, with thousands of years of history layered upon itself – and you will find everything here from Roman ruins to Renaissance art. It is also home to fantastic food, the Vatican City and sights like the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and the Spanish Steps.Certainly 3 days in Rome is not enough to see absolutely everything that the city has to offer, but it’s definitely enough to see all the highlights if you manage your time effectively.

Castel Sant’Angelo

Originally built as a mausoleum for the Emperor Hadrian, the Castel Sant’Angelo has been sitting on the banks of the river Tiber for nearly two thousand years. In that time it has evolved from its initial role as a tomb, becoming a fortress, a castle, and finally, a museum. This is one of my favourite sights. I’m not sure why but every time I visit, I feel emotional and very grateful for the blessings in my life. I ve always wanted to visit this place with the man I truly love, and on our 5th year anniversary this happened, so it made me truly happy. If you visit, do try to go towards sunset to enjoy the beautiful scenic views and maybe dinner at that time on the restaurant at the top tier of the castle.

Trevi Fountain

The magnificent fountain known for its beautiful sculptures made of travertine. You still see everyone throwing coins in the fountain, This seems to still be a popular past time, as over three thousand euro’s worth of coins are thrown into the fountain each day. These go to a good cause and each night the coins are removed from the fountain and used by a charity that helps those in need purchase food.

The Pantheon

A little walk from the Trevi Fountain is the incredible Pantheon. This building, which has been standing for almost 2,000 years, is the best preserved Ancient Roman monument in Rome. You cannot not be impressed by it’s incredible dome, which even today, two thousand years since it was built, still holds the record as the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome.

Originally built as a temple to the Roman gods, the Pantheon was converted for use as a Christian church in 609 AD, which is the main reason it survives in such excellent condition today. It’s also notable for being home to the graves of a number of important folk, including the painter Raphael and two Italian Kings. We spent some time here meditating before we set off to our next site. Stunning and mind boggling work of art, especially the dome structure.

Piazza Navona

We recommend a visit to Piazza Navona. This has been a designated public space since the 15th century, and is full of gorgeous Baroque architecture. It’s most famous feature is undoubtedly Bernini’s fountain, which stands at the centre – the Fountain of the Four Rivers, which dates from 1651.

The Piazza is a fun place to be, and often features street performers and markets, depending on the time of day and week that you visit. There are also a lot of options here for dining and drinking as well, although bear in mind that you always pay more in Rome at the more popular locations, especially if they have a terrace or view.

La Bocca Della Verita’ – The Mouth of Truth

Have you ever watched the movie Roman Holiday with Audrey Hepburn? If you have, you will remember that Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn put their hands into the mouth of this massive stone figure, which is said to bite off the hands of liars. We didn’t wait in the long queue for the photo opportunity. Instead we ventured in the church alongside it and said a prayer for peace and prosperity for all. It was thanks to a recommendation by a follower on Instagram @islandfairy that we found this place, so thank you!

Spanish Steps

We visited these early morning during our jog. You can access these by walking in a south easterly direction through the Villa Borghese Gardens and down Viale della Trinita dei Monti.

This 135 step staircase was opened in 1735 to link the Spanish Embassy near the bottom of the steps to the Trinitadei Monti staircase at the top, and are today a popular spot to stop, eat Gelato, and watch the world go by. They were made particularly popular in the 1953 movie Roman Holiday, starring Audrey Hepburn.

I got to enjoy travel and fashion blogging and went home to Malta feeling more motivated and energised to be the best version of myself I can be, seeing all the Roman magnificent structures and feeling the vibrant energy from the capital city.
