A day in the romantic Venice

Before I visited Venice, I had heard from travellers that this city is one of the most charming cities in the world. So while travelling in Italy for work, I stopped in Venice for a day.

Holidays should be about exploring new and unknown places, about relaxing the mind and being open to what’s all around us. While in Venice I had it on my list to experience the gondola rides, to admired the several colourful Venice mask shops and have a look at the food markets.

Venetian Masks

Masks in Venice were created as a symbol of freedom, a means of getting rid of social rules and to conceal the masked person’s identity and social status, not only during Carnival, but also in the everyday life.

Venetian masks are characterised by their intricate design, featuring bright colours such as silver or gold and the use of beautiful decorations and accessories. The masks are mostly worn during the Carnival of Venice but they have been used on many other social occasions in the past.

It was believed that the mask would allow the wearer to act more freely in cases where he or she wanted to mingle with other members of the society outside the bounds of identity and everyday practice, especially for romantic encounters. They are truly fascinating!

Venice canals and gondola

While in Venice like any tourist, I was looking forward to the romantic Gondola ride through the canals. Venice gondola rides are without doubt the number one must-do experience in Venice. Glide through the serene waters, serenaded by your gondolier, against the stunning scenery of the Baroque buildings is an experience you will never forget!

Rialto Markets

Touring local markets is a highlight of any visit to a new city, and finding the markets frequented by locals is a special delight. The Rialto area was the first part of Venice to be developed, and it soon became a special commerce centre. Many things are sold here : fresh fish, fruit and vegetables all lined-up in colourful stalls; also so many types of seafood, nuts, olive oils and flowers.

Rialto Markets

One can easily find the Rialto Markets as they are located alongside the Grand Canal, to the North-West of the Rialto Bridge in the district of San Polo. An interesting fact is that most of the fruit and vegetables sold at the Rialto Markets come, as they have always done, from the nearby island of Sant’Erasmo. In fact all the produce is labelled with its place of origin. The Rialto Markets are a must see place if you like markets!
