Last weekend saw me pack a couple of bikinis, a couple of evening outfits, eyewear, sun cream and a luggage full of other useful things for a mini getaway to Gozo island, to stay at the Kempinskii Hotel San Lawrenz. If you had to ask me which month I prefer to visit Gozo, I would find it difficult to answer you because there is that special something about catching that 15 minute ferry boat to this little rock in the Mediterranean, where time seems to stand still and the energy is extremely calming. Summer is fun as there are lots of things to do in Gozo and at Kempinski you can enjoy the pool, the Spa and lots of delicious food too! And in winter, it’s just as splendid.
While some island destinations have been tainted by unruly tourists, Gozo will always welcome you like your first glass of champagne on New Year’s Eve. It is peaceful and much less busy than its sister island Malta.
The beaches of Gozo – many still in pristine condition, with none of the development of the main island of Malta – are surrounded by some of the cleanest waters in the Mediterranean. These are glorious places to swim, snorkel, play games or just laze in the sun. As for religious sites, Gozo’s churches and chapels are a precious gift of sacred art and architecture – and every village has one!. During this visit, we popped in to Ta Pinu Sanctuary in fact, said a prayer for all humanity and once again enjoyed this blessed place, known for its special miracles. In Gozo, one can switch off, escape entirely from daily life and take some spiritual or romantic time with their partners, The energy is wonderful. And this was our plan 😉
A pic of our suite
As frequent travellers, my husband and I have often been spoiled with expectations of high standards in service. In Gozo, at the Kempinski Hotel, we find that the professional yet intimate and genuine altruism of each individual we meet starting from the receptionists to the bar tenders, to the poolside team make us feel special. Not like family, not like royalty, not like a celebrity, but like a valued “regular.” This really makes our trip here wonderful every time. After all, it is not just the places, but the people that make a travel experience unforgettable. So when my husband and I were invited to attend the 20th Anniversary event since its official opening, not only did I feel so honoured to have been invited but I feel compelled to share what the team here organised to commemorate this milestone, this proud moment in history!
The 20th anniversary of the Kempinski Hotel
The red-carpet event kicked off with a lavish cocktail reception were all invitees were welcomed with champagne and exquisite canapés at the Hotel lobby and greeted by several ladies dressed in corporate red dresses . Shortly after the evening was opened, we were directed to a large conference set up room where we watched some emotional video clips about the history of the Baldacchinofamily , we were treated to some inspiring speeches by Mr. Bernold Schroeder, Chief Operating Officer of Europe and Member of Management Board at Kempinski, Ms Dorothy Baldacchino a Director of Baldacchino Group and also the Minister for Tourism, the Honourable Dr. Konrad Mizzi.

The videos really touched me personally and I found it hard to keep the tears at bay. It’s just you could feel the love and all the emotion when the family members and staff spoke abouhow hard working and genuine Mr. Baldacchino was and how he had brought to life his dream to open a Luxury Hotel. His dream certainly lives on through his family and the current wonderful team at Kempinski San Lawrenz.
The spectacular evening continued in the L’Ortolan Restaurant with diverse culinary stations highlighting the hotel’s rich culinary offer including a remarkable ice sculpture with the Kempinski logo displaying fresh oysters, charcuterie, live cooking stations and an original beautiful desert area set up with a garden concept, a mushroom garden land made of chocolate and candy, following an anniversary cake made in a traditional Maltese clock.
Spectacular ambiance lights and logo projections created a magical atmosphere. We tasted everything and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. As a grand finale the night sky was lit up by a spectacular firework display to a cheering crowd.
Our stay was also memorable. We had a room with one of the best views overlooking the two pools in a very spacious room and we enjoyed the iconic Kempinski Gozo pool area a lot since we were here for 2 days.
I would like to say Thank You to all the team for having us share this special moment with you and wish you so much success for many years to come. Who knows? Maybe we will be back after another 20 or 30 years to celebrate another milestone? 😉
Much love to all
